SAT Essay: Current Events

Link of the Day

Many people like to watch movies about spies who are after important secrets, but in real life spying may not be very glamorous.  Take a look at this story about an American man who was arrested in Russia for trying to recruit spies.  How do you think this story compares to events in the Cold War?  How do you think most Americans feel when they read headlines like this one?  Does your response tell you anything about human nature or your values?

As you prepare for the SAT, you should be becoming an expert on several current events that you can write knowledgeably about when you are given a broad essay prompt.  Write down the facts relevant to this case and then take a look at the following SAT essay questions.  How could you use this event as an excellent example when responding to these questions?

1.  Is striving to achieve a goal always the best course of action, or should people give up if they are not making progress?

2.  Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority?

3.  Is there always another explanation or another point of view?

4.  Is the world changing for the better?
