SAT Essay: Current Event

Link of the Day

Technology changes quickly, and its changes affect both people and institutions.  Take a look at this article about a newspaper that is struggling financially and chose to fire its photographers.  Are news photographers important in a world where anyone can snap an image on a phone?  Why or why not?  Is it important to save newspapers or are they outdated?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of video news reports?

There are some very complex themes in this story.  Name the broad ideas that are involved, such as how people get information, finances, and the contrast between individual and business interests.  Then take note of the details in the story that will support broad statements.  Try outlining a one paragraph response to each of the following SAT essay prompts, using this current event to support your answer.

1.  Are people best defined by what they do?

2.  Should people let their feelings guide them when they make important decisions?

3.  Is striving to achieve a goal always the best course of action, or should people give up if they are not making progress?
