SAT Question of the Day
The SAT question of the day is a Sentence Completion Question that tests your ability to think logically about the vocabulary that you have been given.
Cover up your answer choices and read the sentence carefully. Your blank comes right before the words "plant and animal diversity," so you will have to decide whether there is a diverse array of species in southern forests. Paraphrase the second part of the sentence. It tells you that glaciers wiped out "flora and fauna" in the northern forests. This sentence must be setting up a contrast between the diversity in the southern forests and the lack of diversity in the northern forests.
You now have all the information that you need to make a prediction. Predict the word "much" for the blank because there is a lot more diversity in the southern forests than in the northern.
Now look at your answer choices.
(A) The words "rich in" suggest that there is a lot of something. That matches your prediction! Quickly look over the other choices before selecting this choice.
(B) The word "devoid" contains the word "void," which means lacking. The southern forests aren't lacking; the northern forests are lacking plants and animals because of the glaciers. Eliminate this choice.
(C) "Dependent on" doesn't really make sense. Why would one forest be more dependent on plants and animals than another? All forests consist of plants and animals. Eliminate this answer choice.
(D) It also doesn't make sense to say that the southern forests are "protected from" diversity when you know that these areas are more diverse than other areas.
(E) The word "conflicted" is meant to distract students who only think of diversity in terms of different opinions. However, it is very hard for forests to be "conflicted" because they don't really think about anything, they just exist. Eliminate this choice.
The correct answer is (A).
Words used in this SC:
Onslaught: an onset, assault, or attack
Rich: wealthy or abundantly supplied
Devoid: empty, without
Dependent: relying on someone or something else
Protected: guarded or shielded
Conflicted: full of differing emotions or impulses
